Outreach

Outreach
In 2009-2010 the SPS outreach team
• visited 23 elementary, middle, and high school classrooms
• met weekly with capable and interested third to fifth graders attending a special science enrichment program at Hill Crest Elementary School that focused on experiential learning
• organized and ran an on-campus demo show for 250 fifth graders
• organized and ran hands-on activities based on the themes of light and lasers at Science Unwrapped in April
• participated in demonstrations and contests at Physics Day at Lagoon in May
Funding for these activities came from a Marsh White Award from the national SPS office (see our report) and from the American Physical Society’s LaserFest program (celebrating the 50th anniversary of the laser).
The Outreach Team maintains a Facebook site with news and lots of photos.
If you are interested in exciting kids to learn about science, love designing and doing demos, and/or are thinking about teaching as a profession, we encourage you to come and help out. Contact Brian Tracy, SPS Outreach VP, at br.d.tr@aggiemail.usu.edu.
