January–May 2007 SER 122
This course is a continuation of Optics I and a prerequisite for the
graduate optics courses in ECE. As a continuation, general statements about
approach, problems, and grading given in the syllabus for Optics I will also
apply to this class. They are found on the web at
www.physics.usu.edu/classes/4650-6650/Index.htm. The website for this class
will be www.physics.usu.edu/classes/4680-6680/Index.htm.
Accordingly, the textbook is
Hecht, E., Optics, 4th Edition, 698 pp, Addison
Wesley, San Francisco,
2002. (ISBN 0-8053-8566-5)
Another textbook, at the same level, that I will occasionally refer to is
Pedrotti and Pedrotti, Introduction to Optics, 2nd Edition,
Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1993.
Other references are the same as given previously.
The focus of this semester will be on the subject matter of Chapters 7
through 10 in Hecht: superposition of waves, polarization, interference, and
diffraction. If time permits, we will also look at coherence and lasers.
Students with disabilities should discuss their needs with me during the
first week of class. Many types of provisions (e.g., large print, audio,
Braille, special exam rooms) can be made, if needed, in cooperation with the
Disability Resource Center.
The last day to add or drop classes (painlessly) is 29 January 2007.
Attending a class beyond that date without being officially registered will not
be approved by the Dean's Office.
Classes will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 to 2:45 PM from 09
January 2007 through 27 April 2007. The exception to this is 12-16 March, which
is Spring break. The final exam is on Tuesday, 1 May from 11:30 AM to 1:20 PM.
