How do I get started?

When should I start?

  1. Except for teaching majors, all majors in physics are required to take Physics 4900 -- Research in Physics -- for academic credit.  This is usually done in the senior year.  (Teaching majors are encouraged to take 4900 as well.)

  2. You will get a lot more out of your research experience if you start early.  We urge all of our students to do research as soon as they possibly can.

How do I succeed?

  1. Read the following pages for Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Physics specific projects.  Each project has possible topics, desired skills, and a faculty mentor.

  2. Identify an area of interest.

  3. Introduce yourself to the mentor explaining your interest.

  4. Bring a CV to your meeting indicating what skills you possess.

  5. Be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up.

  1. Be brave, don’t fear failure.

  2. Take OWNERSHIP -- become a creative contributor.

  3. Go to conferences, give presentations, become an author -- tell others what you’ve done (your mastery will increase).
