How do I get started?
How do I get started?
When should I start?
• Except for teaching majors, all majors in physics are required to take Physics 4900 -- Research in Physics -- for academic credit. This is usually done in the senior year. (Teaching majors are encouraged to take 4900 as well.)
• You will get a lot more out of your research experience if you start early. We urge all of our students to do research as soon as they possibly can.
How do I succeed?
• Read the following pages for Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Physics specific projects. Each project has possible topics, desired skills, and a faculty mentor.
• Identify an area of interest.
• Introduce yourself to the mentor explaining your interest.
• Bring a CV to your meeting indicating what skills you possess.
• Be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up.
• Be brave, don’t fear failure.
• Take OWNERSHIP -- become a creative contributor.
• Go to conferences, give presentations, become an author -- tell others what you’ve done (your mastery will increase).
