Research Description

Dr. Held's major goal as a theoretical plasma physicist is to contribute to the realization of controlled magnetic fusion in a terrestrial reactor and to further understanding of astrophysical and lab plasmas. This includes analytic and numerical work to enhance plasma fluid models by incorporating generalized closure relations. These closures, which have been implemented in the plasma fluid code NIMROD, have led to the first numerical simulations of electron kinetic physics on resistive, magnetohydrodynamic time scales. Dr. Held invites promising physics and math students to consider joining his group at Utah State to pursue a PhD in theoretical plasma physics.
